Reflexology is a complementary therapy that can be used for healing and relaxation. It is widely believed that there are channels of energy running through our bodies (sometimes known as zones) and that each of our glands and organs lie within one of these zones. By using gentle pressure on reflex points on the body (generally on the feet but sometimes on the hands and ears also), a practitioner can stimulate the energy flow to another part of the body within that zone to aid circulation and detoxification, thus enabling the body to regain its 'balance'.
There are many theories as to where and when reflexology started. Many people believe it was as early as 5000 years ago in China, or that it has been passed down the generations from the early African and American tribes. However the earliest actual evidence of reflexology being used in ancient times is a pictograph that was discovered in an ancient physicians tomb in Egypt that dates back to approximately 2330BCE. The pictograph depicts two men working on the hands and feet of another two men.
